Running an obsolete control system can bring many challenges, not least of which is getting your hands on difficult to obtain spare parts which may have been out of production for a number of years. Often, control systems may contain obsolete parts and components that are not readily obvious. For example an old interfaces module or interface converter could be present in a control panel that does not get a second thought until the day it fails. Getting hols of replacement components that are obsolete can be extremely difficult and may involve contacting tens or even hundreds of suppliers to track down the right component. Commissioning repairs of such components can also prove difficult with each repair company specialising in a particular manufacturer or component type.
